From manual blind spots to data-driven fault detection

Use Case at Södra Cell – Broken belt drive in a shredder

Executive summary

Without the vibration analysis, the belt damage would have gone unnoticed until failure. MultiViz helped us act early, confirm the fault, and avoid costly downtime in the washing press.

Södra Cell, one of the world’s leading pulp producers, improved its predictive maintenance program by detecting a failing belt drive in a shredder before it broke. Using Viking Analytics’ MultiViz software with SPM sensors, the system automatically raised the asset’s priority, prompting further analysis. A handheld check confirmed the suspicion, and the belt was immediately replaced. The proactive action prevented an unplanned shutdown of the washing press, which would have reduced pulp production for at least four hours.

  • Solution

Machine monitored with SPM sensors + Viking Analytics MultiViz. Early warning through MultiViz mode analysis and priority scoring, before manual threshold alarms triggered. Handheld analysis confirmed fault, immediate belt replacement carried out.

  • Challenge

Hidden belt drive damage, no threshold alarms, risk of washing press shutdown

  • Assets

Belt drive of shredding screw, motor side.
